Homeless Veterans

11/08/08, Press-Telegram article by Greg Mellen reported about "Veterans and homelessness". The talk was presented by the "Homeless Dialogue Collaborative" and this was the fourth in a series. I missed the May event. Mellen reports "...two apartment building owners came forward and made arrangements with health and government officials to open places to young homeless adults," after that talk.

Mellen says the Villages of Cabrillo serves "...535 formerly homeless vets" by providing shelter and services. Yet it is estimated that 1 in 3 of Long Beach's homeless population are veterans. The "problem" "could become acute" as Iraqi war "veterans return to a struggling economy".

A lot of money was made available to cities, like Long Beach, who came up with a 10-year plan to end homelessness. I doubt that GWB was factoring in the potential homeless veterans with his desire to end homelessness in 10 years. He may be clueless about how war contributes to homelessness. Doubt he considered that cost of war when he lied to citizens to garner support for his illegal invasion of Iraq, based on a lie of WMD. Perhaps the talk will have Long Beach city officials forewarned about a potential influx of homeless veterans.
