Clyde Charles

Clyde Charles died at age 55 on Jan. 7, 2009. Clyde was the first inmate to sue the government under federal civil rights law. DNA testing proved he was not guilty of a rape and beating that sent him to prison for life. Released from prison, when DNA proved him innocent of the crime, he became homeless. He also suffered from PTSD.

When the crime happened in 1981, DNA testing was not available. He did not sue the government until 1999. That is a long time to spend in jail for a crime one did not commit. Clyde's is not a rare story and the reason I do not condone the Death Penalty. If Clyde had been sentenced to death, rather than life in prison, he may have joined the many innocent executed for something he did not do.
